Knot Emerges as Top Contender to Succeed Lagarde at ECB
Christine Lagarde's possible early resignation from her position as European Central Bank (ECB) President has led to speculation about who will succeed her. According to sources, France may support Klaas Knot, a former Dutch central bank chief, in his bid for the position. As part of this potential deal, a French candidate could be chosen as the ECB's chief economist.
Knot, 59, served two full terms as head of the Dutch central bank from 2011 to 2025 and has since held an advisory role or campaigned for the ECB presidency. He joined the ECB's rate-setting Governing Council in 2003 and had a complex relationship with former President Mario Draghi. Initially critical of Draghi's stimulus measures, Knot later supported them, but also came into conflict with him over subsequent policies.
Currently serving as Chair of the Financial Stability Board, a global body responsible for monitoring financial stress and devising policy recommendations, Knot is considered a pragmatic policy hawk. His experience and reputation make him a strong contender for the ECB presidency.
Other potential candidates include Pablo Hernandez de Cos, who has headed the Bank for International Settlements since 2025, and Joachim Nagel, head of the Bundesbank since 2022. Nadia Calvino, President of the European Investment Bank, is also mentioned as a possibility.
