Kochie Warns RBA: Another Rate Hike Would Punish Families
David Koch, economic director at Compare the Market, is urging the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) to hold off on another interest rate hike. The RBA has already increased the cash rate three times this year, with the current rate sitting at 4.35%. Ahead of their August decision, Koch warns that further hikes will unfairly punish households for inflation driven by factors outside their control.
Rising petrol prices and grocery costs are pushing families to the limit, and Koch argues that consumers are not responsible for these increases. He notes that another rate rise would essentially be a punishment for filling up their cars, as the RBA has linked the cash rate hike to inflation caused by rising commodity prices.
Koch estimates that a 0.25 percentage point increase in the cash rate would add around $120 per month to repayments on an average-sized $735,000 mortgage. He expects the RBA to leave rates unchanged this month but warns homeowners not to assume the threat of further hikes has disappeared.
