Korean Stocks Bracing for Chuseok Volatility as Fed Signals and US-China Talks Loom
The Korean stock market is bracing for potential short-term volatility ahead of the Chuseok holiday. Multiple speeches by Federal Reserve officials this week may sway the market's sentiment, particularly regarding monetary policy direction.
Industry events such as 'Battery Korea 2026' and 'Meta Connect' could also impact sector stock prices. The outcome of the U.S.-China summit on September 24th will be closely watched, with key issues like AI and trade set to dominate discussions.
Despite the prevailing view that this rate hike is unlikely to lead to a continuous tightening cycle, some analysts caution against complacency. Lee Jae-won of Yuanta Securities Korea notes that whether corporations' profits are damaged is more important than the rate hike itself.
NH Investment & Securities' Na Jeong-hwan also sees no evidence of a continuous rate-hike cycle and believes this hike will curb inflation expectations if oil prices fall.
The market's performance leading up to Chuseok has historically been weak, with an average KOSPI return of -0.42% for the five sessions before the holiday over the past 10 years.
