Korean Won Strengthens Against US Dollar, Airlines Soar
The Korean won has strengthened against the US dollar, dropping to 1,358.4 won per dollar from its peak of 1,561 won on June 5th, representing a decline of approximately 13%.
This downward trend in the exchange rate is attributed to several factors, including a surge in domestic semiconductor stocks, falling international oil prices, and a decrease in U.S. Treasury yields.
The aviation industry, which has significant foreign currency expenditures, is expected to benefit from the stronger won, as it directly reduces operational costs such as fuel, aircraft maintenance, and lease payments, all typically settled in dollars.
Major airlines like Korean Air, Asiana Airlines, Jin Air, and Jeju Air have seen their stock prices rise over the past week due to this development.
