Kyrgyzstan's Economic Boom: A Side Effect of Russia's Sanctions Evasion

Kyrgyzstan has emerged as one of the fastest-growing economies in the world, defying expectations with a growth rate of over nine percent per year since 2022.

The country's economy is built on gold mining, remittances from migrant workers, and agricultural commodities like potatoes.

However, experts point out that this boom tracks closely with Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the subsequent Western sanctions against Moscow.

Kyrgyzstan's trade flows with Russia have nearly tripled to C$1.5 billion since 2022, with a significant portion of these goods being re-exports destined for Russia.

The European Union has activated its anti-circumvention tool against Kyrgyzstan over concerns of surging re-exports in dual-use items like computer-controlled machine tools and radio equipment.
