Labour's Budget Plans Set to Bring 'Brutal Cuts' Amid Rising Inflation

The UK is bracing for what could be another 'brutal budget' as Labour ministers prepare to unveil their tax and spending plans in October. According to SNP Commons leader Dave Doogan, the government is 'softening people up' for a budget that will bring cuts and tax rises. The warning comes after Prime Minister Andy Burnham conceded that next month's Budget will be 'challenging'.

The latest inflation figures show Consumer Prices Index (CPI) inflation reached 3.1% in August, linked to high petrol and diesel costs. The Bank of England warned that volatile global energy costs could push inflation higher still. While interest rates remained steady this week, governor Andrew Bailey said it's 'more likely' that rates could need to rise if the volatility continues.

With financial pressures mounting across the country, Mr Doogan claimed that the UK Government is 'cynically rolling the pitch for another brutal budget in Brexit Britain'. He accused Labour of failing to develop a plan to put money in people's pockets and instead focusing on softening them up for cuts and tax rises.

The SNP MP emphasized the need for Scotland to 'shape a future beyond Westminster' and called for independence, saying it's the route to a fairer, wealthier nation. A Labour Party spokesperson responded by accusing the SNP of speculating ahead of the budget and said the government is focused on giving families and businesses breathing space.
