Lagarde Blocks Binance Bid as Eurozone Stablecoin Fears Grow
The European Central Bank's president, Christine Lagarde, has reportedly intervened to block Binance's bid for an EU-wide crypto license through Greece. According to the Wall Street Journal, Greek regulators had been preparing to approve Binance's application under the Markets in Crypto-Assets regulation (MiCA) before a senior official told the exchange that Lagarde wanted the decision delayed.
Binance subsequently withdrew its application in June, but not before sparking concerns about the impact of dollar-denominated stablecoins on Europe's payments sovereignty agenda. Lagarde has repeatedly warned about the growing exposure to these stablecoins, which have expanded from less than $10bn six years ago to more than $300bn today, with the majority denominated in US dollars.
The dispute highlights tensions within MiCA itself, as well as the need for regulators to balance financial integrity and effective supervision with monetary sovereignty. Binance's experience illustrates why a licensing decision made in one member state can have consequences throughout the single market.
