Lagarde Blocks Binance EU Entry Amid Digital Euro Push
Christine Lagarde, the head of the European Central Bank (ECB), allegedly blocked Binance, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange, from operating within the European Union. According to a report by the Wall Street Journal, Lagarde intervened to prevent Binance from obtaining a MiCA license, which is required for local Crypto-Asset Service Providers to operate in the EU.
The report states that Lagarde was concerned about Binance's dominance of dollar-based stablecoins and its potential impact on euro alternatives. The ECB has been pushing for the development of a digital euro, which it sees as key to Europe's financial autonomy.
Binance pleaded guilty to anti-money-laundering violations in 2023 and paid a record $4.3 billion fine. While this may have provided regulators with a justification for blocking Binance, Lagarde's stance on Bitcoin is not new. In 2021, she described it as 'a highly speculative asset' used for money laundering.
