Lagarde Blocks Binance EU Entry Amid Stablecoin Concerns
The European Central Bank President, Christine Lagarde, has blocked Binance from operating in the European Union, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal. The top crypto exchange had been on the cusp of gaining access to the trading bloc but was told it couldn't after Lagarde intervened.
Binance does not have the necessary MiCA license required for local Crypto-Asset Service Providers (CASP) in the EU, and the company withdrew its application in Greece in June. The move is seen as a significant setback for Binance, which is the world's largest crypto exchange and handles billions of dollars in stablecoins daily.
Lagarde has been critical of Bitcoin in the past, calling it 'a highly speculative asset' used for money laundering. However, she has taken a different approach to central bank digital currencies (CBDCs), which are digital forms of fiat currency. The EU is moving forward with a digital euro under Lagarde's leadership.
