Lagarde Blocks Binance EU License Bid Amid Regulatory Concerns
The European Central Bank (ECB) President Christine Lagarde personally intervened to block Binance's bid for an EU license, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal. Greek regulators had nearly approved the application before Lagarde asked Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis to block it.
The direct intervention raises questions about the ECB president's influence over regulatory processes and whether she has too much sway in decisions that are supposed to be made by formal authorities.
Binance, a leading cryptocurrency exchange, had been seeking an EU license to expand its operations across the European Union. The move was seen as a key step for Binance's compliance prospects and adoption in the region.
