Lagarde Blocks Binance's Greek License Bid Amid Stablecoin Concerns
Christine Lagarde's intervention in Binance's bid for a MiCA license in Greece has added another layer of complexity to the cryptocurrency exchange's European strategy. According to the Wall Street Journal, Lagarde personally weighed in to block Binance's application, citing concerns over dollar-backed stablecoins and their potential impact on the digital euro project.
The decision was made despite Binance claiming its file was complete before the process was blocked. The exchange has since withdrawn its Greek application and reduced its operations. Gillian Lynch, Binance's Europe head, stated that 'our file was judged complete' before emphasizing that 'nothing was missing, no important element was pending.'
The European Central Bank (ECB) has no formal power to issue MiCA licenses, which are currently granted by national authorities. However, the ECB's concerns over stablecoins may indicate a shift towards centralizing license authority with the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA).
