Lagarde Considers Early Departure from ECB Amid French Presidential Election Concerns

European Central Bank (ECB) President Christine Lagarde has hinted at leaving her post early, citing uncertainty surrounding the French presidential election in April 2027. In an interview with French newspaper La Croix, Lagarde stated that she couldn't rule out stepping down a few months before her term expires.

'I do not exclude the possibility of stepping down a few months before the end of my term,' Lagarde said. 'But I have not announced anything concrete.'

Lagarde's eight-year term runs until October 2027, and she has ruled out standing in the French presidential election, citing her age as a factor.

'That would not be a good idea at all,' she stated when asked about running. 'On the one hand, it requires vitality, energy and strength. On the other hand, such a commitment inevitably involves certain sacrifices.'
