Lagarde Considers Early Exit from ECB Amid Presidency Speculation

European Central Bank (ECB) President Christine Lagarde has hinted that she may leave her position before her term ends in October 2027. Speaking to 'Le Croix' newspaper, Lagarde stated that while she hasn't made any concrete decisions, it's possible for her to step down a few months early. However, she emphasized that this would only be by a short margin and wouldn't significantly impact the institution.

Lagarde also addressed speculation about her potential run in the French presidential elections in April 2027. She ruled out any possibility of seeking the presidency, citing her age (70) as one reason. 'That would not be a good idea at all,' she said. 'It is not the same job... there is a question of vitality, energy, and strength.'

In a related development, Lagarde took the opportunity to criticize Jean-Luc Mélenchon's proposal to cancel France's public debt through non-payment. She called this plan 'technically uncertain and financially very dangerous,' warning that it could lead investors to demand onerous conditions or stop financing the country's fiscal deficit altogether.
