Lagarde Dismisses 2027 Presidential Bid Amid France's Financial Woes
European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde has dismissed speculation about her potential candidacy in France's 2027 presidential election. In an interview with newspaper La Croix, Lagarde stated that running for president would not be a 'good idea at all' due to her age and the demands of such a role.
Lagarde, who is currently 70 years old, emphasized the importance of vitality, energy, and strength in holding public office. She noted that leaving the ECB in 2027 would only be a few months before the end of her term.
Her comments come after ECB board member Isabel Schnabel resigned last week to join the International Monetary Fund. Lagarde described France's financial situation as 'dangerous,' with debt approaching 120% of GDP and no clear plan to control its growth.
Lagarde called for reducing bureaucratic barriers, expanding labor market reforms, and addressing pension system challenges created by rising life expectancy.
