Lagarde Downplays Euro Zone Inflation Concerns Amid Market Bets
European Central Bank (ECB) President Christine Lagarde has emphasized that the current inflation surge in the euro zone is not yet generating 'dangerous second-round effects.' As a result, she believes a moderate policy response from the ECB remains appropriate. Euro zone inflation has surpassed 3% and may reach as high as 4% by year's end, double the bank's target of 2%. This has led to market expectations of up to four more interest rate hikes in the next year on top of two moves over the summer.
Lagarde appeared to temper some of the most aggressive market bets. She attributed the surge in oil and gas prices to the US-Iran conflict, rather than solely to monetary policy. This stance suggests that the ECB may not need to take drastic measures to combat inflation.
