Lagarde Hints at Early ECB Exit, Rules Out French Presidential Bid
European Central Bank (ECB) President Christine Lagarde has hinted at leaving her post early, but emphasized that she will still be in office by 2027. In an interview with French newspaper 'La Croix', quoted by DPA, Lagarde said that if she were to step down, it would only be for a few months and would not significantly impact the institution.
Lagarde's eight-year term at the ECB expires on October 31, 2027. The 70-year-old Frenchwoman ruled out running for French president in the April 2027 elections, citing the 'vitality' required for the position.
The possibility of Lagarde leaving the ECB early has been speculated about for months, with some reports linking it to concerns that a right-wing populist victory in France could complicate the selection of her successor. However, no official decision has been made on an early departure.
