Lagarde Intervention Derails Binance's EU License Bid Through Greece
According to a report by The Wall Street Journal cited by Wu Blockchain, European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde personally intervened in Binance's efforts to obtain an EU-wide cryptocurrency license through Greece. This intervention reportedly prevented the expected approval from moving forward and led to the collapse of Binance's Greek licensing effort.
Binance had pursued authorization through Greece's financial regulator as part of its effort to establish a regulatory foothold across the European Union. The company had prepared for what it believed would be a successful outcome in Greece, drafting a statement announcing the approval and planning for Chief Executive Richard Teng to travel to Athens for a photograph with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
However, Lagarde's intervention apparently changed the course of events. The Wall Street Journal report describes the intervention as a key factor in the collapse of Binance's Greek licensing effort. This development raises questions about the distinction between formal licensing authority and broader institutional influence under the MiCA framework.
