Lagarde Keeps Door Open to Early ECB Exit Amid Succession Rumors

European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde has hinted at an early exit from her position. When asked if she would remain in office until her term ends in October 2027, Lagarde replied 'we'll see.' This response came amidst rumors of her potential resignation that have persisted for most of the year.

When pressed on whether this meant she would indeed leave in 2027, Lagarde added, 'What I can tell you at this point is that whatever the time, it will be handled in the most professional way as it should be.'

The ECB president's comments come after sources told Reuters this week that France would back Dutchman Klaas Knot to succeed her as part of a deal in which a French candidate would be chosen for chief economist.
