Lagarde Rules Out 2027 French Presidential Bid Citing Age and Demands
European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde has ruled out running in France's 2027 presidential election. In an interview with newspaper La Croix, Lagarde cited her age and the demands of such a role.
'That would not be a good idea at all,' Lagarde said. 'First, there's the question of vitality, energy, and strength.'
Lagarde noted that she will only leave the ECB in 2027, just a few months before the end of her term. This statement appears to put an end to speculation about a potential early departure from the central bank.
Lagarde also described France's current financial position as 'dangerous,' with debt approaching 120% of GDP and no clear plan to control its growth.
