Lagarde Rules Out 2027 French Presidential Bid Citing Age Concerns

European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde has ruled out running in France's 2027 presidential election, citing her age and the demands of such a role. In an interview with newspaper La Croix, she stated that at 70 years old, 'it would not be a good idea at all' to pursue the presidency.

Lagarde also expressed concerns about France's current financial position, describing it as 'dangerous' due to debt approaching 120% of GDP. She called for reducing bureaucratic barriers, expanding labor market reforms, and addressing pension system challenges created by rising life expectancy.

The comments appear to put an end to speculation about a potential early departure from the central bank to pursue France's highest political office. Lagarde noted that if she were to leave the ECB in 2027, it would only be a few months before the end of her term.
