Lagarde Rules Out French Presidency Bid Citing Age and Financial Challenges

European Central Bank (ECB) President Christine Lagarde has ruled out running for France's presidency in 2027, stating that it 'would not be a good idea' at her age. The 70-year-old leader made this comment during an interview with newspaper La Croix on Wednesday.

Lagarde said that if she were to step down early from the ECB in 2027, it would only be by a few months. She emphasized the importance of vitality and energy for such a commitment, as well as the 'unavoidable sense of sacrifice' involved.

France is currently facing financial challenges, with Lagarde stating that its debt-to-GDP ratio is approaching 120% with no clear trajectory to control growth. To address this issue, she called for reforms to restore confidence and a credible path forward.
