European Central Bank (ECB) President Christine Lagarde has ruled out running in the 2027 French presidential election, stating that it is not part of her plans. In an interview with the Japanese newspaper Yomiuri Shimbun, Lagarde emphasized her commitment to defending fundamental principles such as the rule of law, international cooperation, and respect for all cultures. She expressed concern over the current political climate in France, particularly the lack of discussion on crucial issues or the spread of misinformation.

Lagarde also addressed her decision to step down as ECB President on February 7, 2027, nine months earlier than planned. She described her seven-year tenure as intense and challenging, marked by heavy responsibilities during turbulent times. Despite the difficulties, she highlighted the collaborative effort with her colleagues and the institution's resilience.

The ECB chief criticized one of the presidential candidates, who is polling well, for proposing the 'write-off' of sovereign debt. Lagarde stressed the importance of speaking out based on facts and truth rather than propaganda. She noted that while her departure is emotional, it is a natural part of the job's cycle.
