Lagarde Says ECB Rate Hikes Will Depend on Future Developments
European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde stated that interest rate hikes will depend on future developments. Speaking to RTÉ's Today with David McCullough, she acknowledged the current uncertain economic climate.
Lagarde noted that the ECB would assess inflation outlook, underlying inflation, and monetary policy transmission before making decisions about interest rates. She emphasized that bringing inflation back to 2% is a key goal, as it offers price stability for Europeans.
She also mentioned that mortgage payers are in the minds of decision-makers when considering changes to interest rates. Lagarde added that the ECB pays attention to housing costs, growth, and employment, with current growth being more promising than anticipated.
