Lagarde Set to Depart ECB in 2027, Fuels Succession Speculation

European Central Bank (ECB) President Christine Lagarde has announced her intention to leave the central bank in 2027, confirming that she will not serve beyond her current term. In an interview with Ouest-France on September 12, Lagarde stated that she would be turning 71 soon and knows when to call it a day.

When asked about returning to national politics after leaving the ECB, Lagarde ruled out any possibility, citing her age as a reason for retirement. This news comes amid speculation over who could succeed her as head of the ECB, with France reportedly considering former Dutch central bank chief Klaas Knot for the position.

Lagarde's tenure at the ECB has seen her address inflation, interest rates, and economic risks facing the euro area. She noted that inflation in the euro area was at 3.3%, above the ECB's 2% medium-term target. With Lagarde set to leave in 2027, attention is now turning towards the candidates who could eventually take over as ECB president.
