Lagarde Stays at ECB Until 2027, Vows Pluralism in Top Positions

European Central Bank (ECB) President Christine Lagarde has announced that she will remain in her position until at least 2027, amid speculation about a possible early departure to lead the World Economic Forum. In an interview with Irish public broadcaster RTE, Lagarde stated, 'I will leave in 2027.' However, when asked if she would complete her term scheduled for October, she replied that it was too soon to say and emphasized that 'the matter will be managed with the utmost professionalism.'

The ECB staff committee has expressed concerns about a prolonged period of uncertainty regarding Lagarde's succession, warning that it could damage the institution's prestige. The committee urged management to provide clarity on possible leadership transitions. Several prominent candidates are in the running to succeed Lagarde, including Pablo Hernández de Cos and Klaas Knot.

Lagarde has emphasized the importance of having a diverse set of skills within the ECB's governing bodies, stating that 'a solid combination of high-level economic knowledge is needed.' She noted that her own legal background was useful during the Covid crisis when implementing emergency purchasing programs and defending them in court. The term of Chief Economist Philip Lane ends in June 2027, while Isabel Schnabel may leave her position as German representative on the ECB Executive Board soon.
