Lagarde Stays Mum on 2027 Exit Date Amid ECB Succession Talk

European Central Bank (ECB) President Christine Lagarde has reaffirmed her plan to step down in 2027, but declined to specify whether she will complete her full term or leave earlier. Speaking on Ireland's RTE Radio, Lagarde said 'I'll leave in '27', but when asked if that means October of that year, replied 'we'll see'.

Lagarde has previously stated that she will not depart before 2027 and has hinted at a potential exit, saying 'when there is something to report about me personally, you'll be the first one to know', adding 'there is nothing to report'. The ECB's future is now being discussed by EU officials, with Spanish Economy Minister Carlos Cuerpo stating it's time to start thinking about the bank's next steps.

Cuerpo expressed support for Lagarde, saying 'it is up to her to decide whether or not she finishes her mandate and we will be supporting her no matter what'. The exact timing of Lagarde's departure remains unclear, but the ECB has confirmed that it will handle the transition professionally when the time comes.
