Lagarde Suggests Possible Early Departure from ECB Post

European Central Bank (ECB) President Christine Lagarde hinted at possibly leaving her post early, but stressed that she had not announced any specific plans. Speaking to La Croix newspaper, she mentioned that she could depart a few months before the end of her eight-year term in October 2027.

Lagarde downplayed the prospect of an early departure, stating it would not be a major shock. She also ruled out participating in France's presidential election next year, saying it would require 'life energy, strength and considerable personal sacrifices'.

Regarding France's public finances, Lagarde described the country's approaching 120% gross domestic product debt as a serious problem without a clear plan for reduction. To restore confidence, she emphasized the need for a convincing plan, shared commitments, and reforms.

Lagarde called for simplifying administrative procedures, continuing labor market reforms, and addressing pressure on the pension system due to increasing life expectancy. She noted that the established pension model must adapt to demographic changes.
