Lagarde Suggests Possible Early Exit from ECB Presidency
ECB President Christine Lagarde has hinted at possibly leaving office early, months before her eight-year term ends in October 2027. In an interview with French newspaper La Croix, she said she could depart a few months ahead of schedule but emphasized that no specific plans have been announced.
Lagarde stressed that any early departure would be limited to a few months and wouldn't represent a major upheaval. She also addressed speculation about her potential candidacy in France's presidential election next year, firmly stating 'That would not be a good idea at all.'
The ECB President cited the immense demands of the role, including the necessity for 'vitality, energy, and strength,' alongside personal sacrifices that such a commitment entails. She underscored her current responsibility to serve the European public interest.
Lagarde also touched on France's financial situation, warning that its public debt approaching 120% of GDP without a clear trajectory to bring it under control poses a serious problem. She called for simplifying administrative and regulatory frameworks, pursuing labor market reforms, and addressing pressures on the pension system due to rising life expectancy.
