Lagarde Triggers ECB Succession Battle Amid Schnabel Departure
Christine Lagarde has sent a letter to António Costa, the president of the European Council, requesting the initiation of the formal procedure for replacing Isabel Schnabel as a member of the Executive Committee of the ECB. Schnabel announced her early departure from the institution due to her upcoming role at the International Monetary Fund (IMF), where she will head the Monetary and Capital Markets Department starting January 4, 2027.
The process involves analyzing candidacies proposed by member states during the Eurogroup meeting on October 8 in Luxembourg. The European Council will then ratify the appointment after consulting with the ECB and the European Parliament, requiring a reinforced qualified majority of at least 16 countries representing 65% of the euro area population.
The departure of Schnabel is part of a broader turnover at the ECB, including the end of Philip Lane's term as chief economist in June 2027. The governments of the eurozone are working to divide influential positions that will become vacant, with Pablo Hernández de Cos and Klaas Knot emerging as prominent contenders for key roles.
