Lagarde's Departure Sets Off German-French Power Struggle at ECB
European Central Bank (ECB) President Christine Lagarde has hinted that she may step down soon, sparking a battle for succession between Germany and France.
Lagarde, who will turn 71 next year, told RTE Radio that her decision to leave is purely due to age, saying 'One needs to know when to stop.'
However, the move has ignited speculation about her potential successor, with France and Germany engaging in a rivalry for the top spot.
France is positioning itself for the possibility of a far-right Marine Le Pen victory in next year's presidential election and is pushing for former Dutch Central Bank Governor Klaas Knot to become the next ECB president in exchange for securing the position of ECB Chief Economist.
