Lagarde's Exit Triggers ECB Succession Speculation
There is growing speculation about who will succeed European Central Bank (ECB) President Christine Lagarde, whose term extends until October 2027. Rumors of her early resignation have persisted throughout the year, according to Reuters.
France could support former Dutch central bank chief Klaas Knot for the ECB presidency in exchange for backing a French candidate as chief economist, a potential deal that has been floated. Knot is considered a pragmatic policy hawk and served on the ECB's rate-setting Governing Council for 14 years, initially opposing Mario Draghi's stimulus measures but eventually coming around.
Other candidates mentioned include Pablo Hernandez De Cos, who heads the Bank for International Settlements; Joachim Nagel, head of Germany's Bundesbank since 2022; and Nadia Calvino, President of the European Investment Bank. While Calvino has never expressed interest in the job, her name is often mentioned in private conversations.
Nagel has altered Germany's relationship with the ECB, toning down rhetoric and rejoining the fold, albeit as a moderate hawk. De Cos is known for his pragmatic approach and ability to bring evidence-based arguments to the table.
