Lescure Rejects AI Slowdown, Urges Faster Development for European Competitiveness
French Finance Minister Roland Lescure has rejected calls to slow down artificial intelligence development, urging European countries to accelerate their AI efforts to stay competitive globally. Speaking at an event organized by France Digitale, a French startup lobby, Lescure stated that such delays would primarily benefit current market leaders in the United States.
The move marks a significant shift in European technology policy, framing AI development as a matter of industrial competition and sovereignty. This stance aligns with recent commentary from European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde, who has emphasized the need for Europe to develop its own AI infrastructure and data centers to reduce its dependency on external powers.
However, France faces significant hurdles in becoming an AI competitor, including a lowered 2026 economic growth forecast of 0.5% and a widening capital gap for local technology firms. The country's high public debt and limited fiscal space create a challenging environment for state-led investment, which is often required to build the massive computing capacity and infrastructure that modern AI systems demand.
