The Federal Reserve Bank of New York has released data showing that liberal arts majors are doing surprisingly well in the job market. Despite fears that automation and AI will replace them, many liberal arts graduates are finding secure and well-paying employment.
Journalism majors have the strongest job outcomes among liberal arts students, with a 2.3% unemployment rate compared to the overall average of 5.7%. They typically start at around $49,000 per year and see their wages rise by over 75% by mid-career.
Communication and political science majors also fare well, although they face higher unemployment rates than journalism graduates but earn more in early and mid-career stages. However, some experts warn that the rise of AI may still impact these fields, with a Microsoft study suggesting that journalists and political scientists are among the most exposed to automation.
