Liberals Fail to Deliver on Economy Act Promises
The Liberal government under Prime Minister Mark Carney introduced Bill C-5, the One Canadian Economy Act, over a year ago. The bill aimed to dismantle Canada's internal trade barriers and empower federal cabinet to designate major 'national interest' projects.
However, since its introduction, Canada's internal trade barriers remain in effect, and no new projects have been created. The government is now introducing another omnibus bill, Bill C-39, promising to solve the same problems.
A statement from the Liberals reveals that not one project has met the threshold to be assessed by an integrated review panel since its introduction in 2019. This raises questions about the effectiveness of the regulatory process and why it took seven years for the government to acknowledge its need for change.
