Liberals to Table Major Economic and Labour Bill Amid Union Fears
The Canadian Liberal government is set to table a major economic and labour bill on Monday afternoon. The legislation, known as Bill C-38, aims to strengthen the economy and make significant changes to the Canada Labour Code.
According to Prime Minister Mark Carney, the bill will be the 'most consequential economic legislation certainly of this parliamentary session, arguably over the course of the next few years.'
The government has signalled that it wants to see changes to labour laws overseeing federally-regulated industries after a series of impactful strikes at airlines and ports.
Labour unions across Canada are bracing for the bill, fearing that it will restrict workers' abilities to strike. The Canadian Labour Congress has stated that any new restriction on the right to strike is unacceptable.
