Lombardelli's Lull: Bank of England Deputy Goes AWOL

Clare Lombardelli, the deputy governor for monetary policy at the Bank of England, has been unusually quiet this year. One of her responsibilities when she joined the bank in July 2024 was to 'communicate with authority and credibility to Parliament, the media, the markets and the wider public.'

Data compiled by Bloomberg shows that Lombardelli has made just two public appearances this year, tying for the fewest among Monetary Policy Committee members. Only one of those events was related to interest rates.

Lombardelli's last full speech on monetary policy was in May 2025, more than a year ago. Her low profile has raised questions about her communication strategy and whether she is fulfilling her duties effectively.
