Luxon Pins National's Election Hopes on Faster Economic Growth
Prime Minister Christopher Luxon has emphasized that economic growth remains an unfinished agenda for his government. If re-elected on November 7, National's key priority will be to achieve faster economic growth.
Luxon made these comments during a visit to the opening of a new distribution facility operated by Glowbal NZ Ltd in Auckland's Māngere suburb. He highlighted the importance of local businesses contributing to the economy through investment, growth, and employment.
The Prime Minister noted that New Zealand needs to grow faster to keep pace with larger economies like Australia, Singapore, the United States, Canada, the UK, and Japan. His government's focus is on expanding the overall economic 'pie' rather than simply redistributing existing resources.
Luxon also reaffirmed National's commitment to returning the country's books to surplus by 2028/29, a target projected in Treasury's Budget 2026 forecasts. He emphasized that National's approach centers on growing the economy, creating jobs, and lifting wages while maintaining fiscal discipline.
