Luxon Stresses Economic Issues Over Sexuality in Voting Decision
Prime Minister Christopher Luxon has spoken out on his views regarding sexuality and its role in voting, stating that it should not be the sole reason for choosing one's vote. He believes that issues such as inflation, interest rates, economic growth, education, and healthcare should take precedence.
Luxon also discussed the current coalition government, saying that he would prefer to have a National Party-only cabinet but acknowledging that this is not possible under MMP. He stated that the parties find common ground where they can, while ACT and New Zealand First continue to advocate for positions that National may not share.
When asked about New Zealand First's Legislation (Definitions of Woman and Man) Amendment Bill, Luxon revealed that he personally leans towards having some definition around gender. He confirmed that there will be support across the National Party for the bill, but stopped short of committing to support it beyond the select committee stage.
Luxon emphasized his commitment to supporting rainbow New Zealanders, stating that he wants them to know they are respected and valued. He also highlighted areas where he believes further reform is needed, including surrogacy law, which he said would have bipartisan support.
