Macklem Warns of Persistent Inflation Pressures as Oil Nears $100
Canada's top central banker has sounded an alarm about rising inflation pressures as oil prices near $100 per barrel. Bank of Canada Governor Tiff Macklem warned that elevated energy costs are adding persistence to headline inflation, complicating efforts to balance fighting price pressures with protecting a slowing economy.
The Bank's Consumer Price Index is running at approximately 3%, a full percentage point above the 2% target. Energy is the primary culprit, with oil approaching $100 pushing fuel and heating costs higher across the country.
Macklem signaled that the Bank may need to hike interest rates if inflation refuses to cooperate. He emphasized the 'delicate timing' required to navigate conflicting forces, expressing a willingness to raise rates but also reluctance to curtail growth unnecessarily if pressures remain manageable.
