Makhlouf Cautious on ECB Rate Hike Amid Ongoing Global Uncertainty
The Central Bank of Ireland's governor, Gabriel Makhlouf, has weighed in on the European Central Bank's recent interest rate hike. In a blog post, he described the 0.25 percentage point increase as 'a measured response' to spiking inflation.
Makhlouf pointed out that energy prices remain high, with Brent crude oil topping $107 (€92.16) per barrel on Thursday and remaining close to $105 on Friday. This has led to higher inflation, but experts warn against hiking interest rates too aggressively when it's driven by energy costs rather than excessive consumption.
Makhlouf emphasized that there is 'significant uncertainty' in the European economy due to ongoing tensions in the Middle East. He noted that the ECB is already seeing a tightening of financing conditions, which could indicate an economic slowdown.
Despite market expectations of three rate hikes over the next year, Makhlouf remains non-committal, stating that there is 'no pre-commitment' to future moves. He will closely monitor energy prices and their impact on consumer inflation before making any decisions.
