Mann Slams Bank of England Over Inflation Messaging
Catherine Mann, a Bank of England Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) external member and the central bank's leading 'hawk', criticized the UK central bank for its initial response to the Iran conflict. She argued that the March meeting's decision to hold the policy rate was perceived as a 'wait-and-see posture' rather than a stance against inflation.
Mann pointed out that this interpretation led to rising inflation expectations and a 'monetary policy uncertainty premium', which drove up market interest rates without tightening real financial conditions. She expressed her view that such a situation is unwelcome for central bank policymakers.
The Bank of England's failure to send a strong message on curbing inflation was criticized by Mann, who emphasized the importance of effective monetary tightening in addressing rising prices.
