Merz to Meet Frontrunners for ECB Presidency Amid Leadership Vacuum
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is set to meet two candidates vying for the European Central Bank (ECB) presidency, as discussions over the central bank's future leadership intensify. According to Bloomberg, Merz will meet Spain's Pablo Hernández de Cos and the Netherlands' Klaas Knot in separate meetings. The planned gatherings indicate growing activity behind the scenes as European leaders consider several impending vacancies at the ECB.
ECB President Christine Lagarde has said she may leave her post a few months before her term expires in October 2027, while Executive Board member Isabel Schnabel is due to depart in early January. Chief Economist Philip Lane's term ends in May. Greece's prime minister has suggested seeking a broader agreement covering all three positions.
The meetings also suggest that Berlin is no longer considering Bundesbank President Joachim Nagel for the ECB presidency. Both de Cos and Knot have received public backing from their respective national leaders, with de Cos currently serving as general manager of the Bank for International Settlements and Knot previously heading the Dutch central bank.
The succession process has accelerated following Schnabel's resignation, and euro-zone finance ministers may begin discussions over her replacement as soon as next week. Germany could also seek another senior ECB position, including Lane's chief economist role or Schnabel's markets portfolio.
