Millions Vote on New Euro Banknote Designs

Millions of Europeans have voted on the next generation of euro banknotes in a public survey conducted by the European Central Bank. The survey, which closed on Monday, saw a staggering nine million people cast their ballots.

The new designs will replace the current bridges and architectural styles that have defined the notes since 2002. There are two themes: one features birds and European institutions, while the other showcases historical figures who helped shape Europe, along with everyday scenes from public squares and cultural life.

Lisa Borgenheimer, a professor of Information Design at the Offenbach University of Art and Design, was part of the jury that selected the proposals. She said she was 'really satisfied' with the shortlist, which included designs that showed 'the innovation and imagination of a possible future banknote design'.

The European Central Bank's Governing Council will make the final choice by the end of 2026. However, it may take several years for the new notes to enter circulation.
