Mixed Labor Market Results as States Show Varied Employment Gains
State labor markets showed mixed results in August, with nonfarm payroll employment increasing in a majority of states. Thirty-five states saw gains compared to July, while 15 states and Washington D.C. recorded declines.
Total U.S. nonfarm payroll employment increased by 162,000 jobs in August, following a gain of 21,000 jobs in July. California led the way with a gain of 39,400 jobs, followed closely by Florida at 21,800 and Wisconsin at 11,800.
On the other hand, the 15 states and D.C. that lost jobs collectively shed 61,100 jobs. New York posted the largest decline with a loss of 23,500 jobs.
