Mixed Labour Market Signals for RBA Ahead of Rate Decision
Australia's labour market showed mixed results in August, as employment rose more than expected but the jobless rate still increased.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics reported that employment grew by 39,500 jobs in August, exceeding forecasts of a 20,000 gain. However, this increase was largely driven by part-time positions rising 45,800, while full-time employment fell 6,300.
The unemployment rate rose to 4.6% from 4.5%, its highest level since late 2021, as the participation rate climbed to 67.1%. This means more people are joining the workforce in search of work, which may impact inflation and interest rates set by the Reserve Bank of Australia.
The ABS flagged a methodology change affecting the release, but noted that the August figures are fit for purpose. Analysts see the data as unlikely to alter the RBA's near-term thinking ahead of next week's meeting.
