Modi's Economic Diplomacy: A Response to Global Turbulence
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been actively pursuing new economic partners and strengthening ties with existing ones in an effort to fortify India's economy. In the past year, he has visited at least 20 countries, including France, New Zealand, and Germany, where he has secured significant deals such as submarine technology agreements.
According to The New York Times, Modi's actions are a response to the economic turbulence caused by President Trump's policies, particularly the 50% punitive tariffs on India for buying Russian oil. This has forced India to seek alternative partners and diversify its economy.
The NYT report also notes that 'so-called middle powers', such as France and Canada, are now more receptive to Modi's outreach due to their own geopolitical constraints. These countries see engaging with India as a strategic opportunity to gain access to the world's fastest-growing large economy.
