Moroccan Dirham Fluctuates Amid Global Rate Uncertainty
The Moroccan Dirham has shown varying performances against the world's primary reserve currencies. According to Bank Al-Maghrib, it appreciated by 0.1% against the US Dollar while depreciating by 0.2% against the Euro in mid-August 2026.
This fluctuation is attributed to global rate uncertainty, with the Federal Reserve and European Central Bank navigating their monetary policies. The Dirham's exchange rate dynamics have significant implications for Morocco's economy, influencing import costs, agricultural exports' competitiveness, and remittances from Moroccans Residing Abroad (MRE).
BAM has maintained a robust financial buffer, with official reserve assets reaching MAD 500.7 billion in mid-August 2026, representing a 22.6% year-on-year increase. This provides the central bank with crucial ammunition to defend the Dirham against external volatility.
