UK lawmakers are urging an investigation into the treatment of whistleblowers by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) following the death of Simon Andriesz, a former senior employee of BGC Partners. Andriesz died last month in Thailand after exposing alleged links between US commerce secretary Howard Lutnick and the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. He had shared evidence with the FCA, FBI, and other watchdogs, suggesting Lutnick's public statements about his associations with Epstein were misleading.

Andriesz's family confirmed he took his own life on September 23, with no suggestion of foul play. Before his death, Andriesz had accused the FCA of inaction and claimed he faced retaliation after exposing misconduct at BGC Partners. He alleged that cash from a bonus pool was embezzled for improper purposes, a claim the firm denies. The FCA had previously told Andriesz there was insufficient evidence to conclude retaliation, a conclusion he believed undermined his ability to file a claim against BGC.

John McDonnell, a Labour MP and chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Investment Fraud and Fairer Financial Services, described Andriesz's death as a 'profound and preventable tragedy.' He emphasized the importance of whistleblowers in the financial regulatory system and warned of consequences if they are not treated properly. The group of MPs called for the FCA to fund an independent review of its handling of whistleblower cases.

The FCA has appointed Lea Paterson, a former Bank of England director, to review how the agency interacted with Andriesz. An FCA spokesperson expressed sorrow over Andriesz's death and stated that the review aims to learn lessons for the future.
