Naira Stalls at Punishing 1,600 Threshold Despite Brief Stability
The Nigerian Naira has shown some stability against the US Dollar on both the official and parallel markets, but its value remains at an alarming NGN 1,608. This exchange rate continues to devastate import-dependent sectors and household purchasing power.
According to data from Bureau De Change operators in Lagos, the parallel market is currently buying the greenback at NGN 1,595 and selling at an average of NGN 1,608. The Central Bank of Nigeria has been trying to inject liquidity into the official market, but these measures are seen as temporary solutions.
The CBN's efforts have not been enough to clear the backlog of legitimate foreign exchange demand, leaving manufacturers, importers, and individuals with limited access to funds for foreign tuition or medical expenses. The country's chronic liquidity constraints continue to force people into the arms of the parallel market.
