National Bank Canada Surpasses Regional Status Through Canadian Western Bank Acquisition
National Bank of Canada has undergone significant transformation in recent years.
No longer seen as the smallest of the country's six big lenders, the bank has expanded its reach across the western provinces through its acquisition of Canadian Western Bank in early 2025.
The integration is yielding strong and broad-based earnings growth, with a net income increase of over 20% in the third quarter of 2026 to $1.307 billion.
This combination of profitability, capital strength, and expanded geography has narrowed the gap between National Bank and its larger peers in the Canadian banking sector.
